AMPHITHEATER VANDALISM COULD REACH $30,000

City officials estimate that vandals caused $25,000 to $30,000 in damage to construction equipment and a wall at the site of the Virginia Beach amphitheater.

The vandalism occurred Friday night at the construction site at Princess Anne and Landstown roads. Police have made no arrests.

The vandals started several pieces of heavy equipment and drove them into ditches, one piece atop another. They also drove a bulldozer into a wall of what is to be an administration building. There was no damage to the main pavilion.

Preliminary estimates put equipment damage at $17,000 to $20,000 and damage to the administration building at $8,000 to $10,000. The losses are insured.

City officials said the vandalism is not expected to affect the scheduled April 1, 1996, date for completion of construction.

Night security patrols - which were slated to be put in place later in the construction of the amphitheater - have been started.
