Indian River High School basketball fans won't get to see their team play at home when the season starts.
The school's gymnasium floor has been damaged by water and is undergoing repairs that are scheduled for completion in January, said school system spokesman Tom Cupitt.
The gymnasium was expanded recently as part of a larger project to overhaul and add onto Indian River High. The project was mostly complete when school opened in September.
But water, let in through a door left open by a construction worker during a rainstorm, got underneath the gym floor and caused it to buckle.
The school system's insurance company will pay for the repairs and then determine whether the construction company is liable for the cost, Cupitt said.
Cupitt said school officials are rearranging Indian River's basketball schedules so that most home games can be played after the gymnasium is repaired. Home games that cannot be rescheduled will be played at Oscar F. Smith High School, Cupitt said.
Meanwhile, the teams are practicing in a smaller auxiliary gym at Indian River. by CNB
