Regarding Governor Allen's acceptance of $100,000 from Joseph W. Luter III of Smithfield Foods Inc., it is clear to most people that this is indeed an ``obvious payoff.'' Smithfield has been cited more than two dozen times in the past year and a half for polluting the Pagan River.
Governor Allen has openly and continually rallied for fewer environmental-safety standards, and why not? He's getting big contributions. Of course, Mr. Luter claims that he gave this contribution without any special treatment from the governor in mind. He should not insult fellow Virginians with this clumsy excuse.
Do not let big business run government! Our rivers, the Chesapeake Bay and ultimately our health are at stake. We need to take care of our precious natural resources. Let's not let Governor Allen spoil the natural beauty of Virginia.
