A 16-year-old Kempsville High School student was arrested Thursday after an unloaded gun was found in a car he had parked in the lot of a private school near the campus.
The student's name was withheld because of his age. He was arrested after police, acting on a tip from school officials, staked out the car in the lot of Rock Church Academy in the 500 block of Kempsville Road.
When the student returned to the car about 2:45 p.m., officers from the 4th Precinct Crime Supression Unit confronted him. He consented to a search of the vehicle, and officers found a .22-caliber Ruger under the driver's seat. He was charged with possession of a concealed weapon, a misdemeanor; and possession of a firearm on school property, a felony punishable by a $2,500 fine and one to five years in prison.
