FISHING IMPROVES; SPECKLED TROUT LEAD THE WAY

Pier fishing improved along the northern beaches Thursday.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported speckled trout, a few keeper flounder and some 2- to 3-pound bluefish landed.

On Avalon Pier, good numbers of 12- to 14-inch speckled trout and small bluefish were taken on bucktails.

A few tailor bluefish and small speckled trout were caught from Nags Head Pier during the day.

Jennette's Pier reported a good run of speckled trout midway on the pier during the late morning. Most of the 12- to 18-inch fish hit bucktail rigs.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier also caught quite a few medium speckled trout during the morning. Additionally, some blues and several keeper flounder were taken.

South of Oregon Inlet, anglers on Rodanthe Pier caught a few bluefish and sea mullet.

On Avon Pier, scattered sea mullet and some speckled trout were taken during the afternoon.

A few sea mullet, sheepshead, spot and an occasional puppy drum were landed from Frisco Pier.

Small bluefish were abundant in the surf from Corolla to Oregon Inlet Thursday.

Around Oregon Inlet, a few puppy drum, bottom fish and speckled trout were taken from both the north and south sides.

Fair numbers of puppy drum and small bluefish were landed by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Good numbers of drum were released by anglers fishing at Cape Point on Wednesday night. A number of the fish beached were in the 40-pound class. Black drum, sea mullet, bluefish and a few puppy drum were taken in the area Thursday.

Plenty of sea mullet, a few blues and some keeper flounder were landed along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Island.

Blue water action off Oregon Inlet was fairly slow Thursday. Charters who braved the rough seas caught some yellowfin tuna and false albacore.

No offshore trips were run by the Hatteras fleet Thursday.

Northerly winds forecast for the coming weekend should produce good fishing along the Dare coast.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 69.5 degrees Thursday. by CNB
