CLANCY HOLLAND: ``ROCK-SOLID CONSERVATIVE''

I have known Clancy Holland since he first became a member of Virginia Beach City Council. For more than 20 years, he has done an outstanding job - first as councilman and mayor and now as a member of the Virginia Senate representing the 7th District. He deserves to be re-elected.

Clancy and his colleagues have done a good job keeping our state fiscally sound. Virginia ranks 49th out of 50 states in state-tax burden as a percentage of personal income. It is one of only five states with a AAA bond rating, and Financial World ranked Virginia as the best fiscally managed state in America in 1992 and 1993. Virginia is one of only two states that made it through the past recession without a tax increase.

George Allen is not responsible for Virginia's solid fiscal condition. We enjoy this quality because of the leadership in the General Assembly.

I am astonished at the distortion of facts and outright lies being perpetrated by Clancy's Republican challenger and our commonwealth's governor. Given the deplorable Allen record with regard to higher education, and the liberal use of distortions in this campaign, I do not think the governor is capable of ``honest change,'' and I do not think that the voters in Virginia are gullible enough to swallow what he is trying to sell.

I make the above observations as one who supported Governor Allen in his campaign to be elected. He has become a serious disappointment to me and many other former supporters.

Clancy Holland and the leadership of the Virginia Senate are rock-solid, fiscal conservatives. We need to do everything we can to encourage such people to seek office, and to support them when they do.
