JOHN L. SPRING

John Layton Spring, 64, a resident of 4004 Oceanfront in Virginia Beach, died Nov. 2, 1995, at Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Mr. Spring was born in West Point, Mi., on Oct. 31, 1931, and was the son of N.V. Spring and Evelyn Bankston Spring. Mr. Spring attended Louisiana State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Agriculture and later a master's degree in Business Administration. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force, and was stationed in Greenland and at Keesler Air Force Base in Shreveport, La. He married Betty Statham of Bogalusa, La., in 1954. For a number of years they resided in Murfreesboro, N.C. In 1969, they moved to Virginia Beach, and soon thereafter he established N.V. Springs Co. Inc., a wholesale fishing takle and sporting goods business based in Virginia Beach and named in honor of his father. He was President and Chairman of the Board at the time of his death.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Betty; two devoted daughters, Liz Ann Spring Parnell of Richmond, Va., and Lynda Spring Smethurst of Charlottesville, Va.; two sons-in-law, Steve Parnell and Doug Smethurst; and six grandchildren, Carol and Britt Parnell of Richmond, and Matthew, Laura, Ellen and Emily Smethurst of Charlottesville. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Eloise Statham, of Bogalusa, La; and many other family members, friends, employees and colleagues will cherish his memory.

A church service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at King's Grant Baptist Church by Rev. Jerry Holcomb. Burial will be at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. There will be a visitation in the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the King's Grant Baptist Church Memorial Fund, the American Cancer Society, or the American Diabetes Assocation.
