Sheila Cliborne lost her husband, Wayne, and her mobile home within two weeks of each other, with no fire, life or health insurance.
Hospice Volunteers and Food Lion donated a used trailer and other community members gave food, furniture and clothing. After a story ran about the Cliborne tragedy on Oct. 12, readers responded with even more generosity.
A visiting firefighter from New Jersey gave Hospice Volunteers a check for $700. A retired man donated $100. Within the last month, more than $2,500 had been given by dozens of readers touched by Cliborne's story.
The only thing left that she needed was a new heater for the trailer, which was estimated to cost $800. Gene Gramlich, executive director of Hospice Volunteers, said that the new heater actually cost $2,200 because all of the duct work needed to be replaced.
The new heater is to be installed on Monday. by CNB
