Wilbur Newman Flynn, 92, of Route 1, died Friday, Nov. 3, 1995, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Katie Moore Flynn, who died Jan. 4, 1981.
Born in Gladys, Nov. 17, 1902, he was a son of the late Edward Washington Flynn and Mattie Sublette Flynn. A lifetime member of Wesleybury United Methodist Church, he served on the official board for 48 years, and was a charter member of Gladys Ruritan Club and Gladys Vounteer Fire Department. A third generation funeral director, Mr. Flynn served his community's needs from 1925 until 1989 at Flynn Funeral Home and was a recipient of the ``Golden Licensee Award'' from Virginia Funeral Directors Association. He was also a farmer. He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Terrell Flynn, who died, May 2, 1986.
He is survived by one son and his wife, Newman Gray and Elizabeth M. Flynn of Gladys; three daughters and their husbands, Wanda Sue and Ronald H. Jennings of Richmond, Martha B. and Leslie O. Millner of Victoria, and Cornelle F. and W. Lawrence Walker of Gladys; one daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Flynn of Gladys; one sister, Frances F. Marsh of Norfolk; one sister-in-law, Phanie P. Flynn of McCormick, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Wesleybury United Methodist Church by the Rev. Patricia Bain. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Finch and Finch Funeral Home, Flynn Branch in Gladys, and other times at his residence. The family suggests that those wishing to make memorials consider Westleybury United Methodist Church or your favorite charity.
