JOSEPH F. FOLEY

Joseph F. Foley, 87, of the 1400 block of Graydon Place, a retired Rear Admiral, died Nov. 4, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.

Rear Admiral Foley was a native of Littleton, N.C., and a resident of Columbus, Ga., and most recently of Norfolk since 1953. He was a member and former vestryman of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Norfolk. Rear Admiral Foley retired from the U. S. Navy after 31 years in 1959. He was a 1931 Graduate of the United States Naval Academy and attended the Submarine School in New London, Conn., and the Post Graduate School in Annapolis. He attended the University of Georgia and received his Masters Degree in Public Administration from Ohio State University. He was a veteran of World War II. Rear Admiral Foley commanded the destroyer Rodman in 1942 and at the end of World War II was in command of and fitting out of destroyer John W. Thomason (DD760). Following the war, Rear Admiral Foley was COMINDIV 2, Director of Civilian Personnel on the staff of Commandant 14th Naval District at Pearl Harbor, Commanding Officer Alshain (AKA 55), Faculty member at the Armed Forces Staff College and finally staff of Commandant Fifth Naval District at Norfolk a member of the Retired Officers Association. Decorations include the Silver Star medal, the Bronze Star medal with Combat ``V'', the Navy Commendation medal and the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Frances Dexter of Columbus, Ga.; two daughters, Kathleen Williamson of Norfolk, Suzanne Brown of Gloucester County, Va.; two granddaughters, Josephine Kalkowski of Chapel Hill, and Cynthia Stockdon of Richmond; and one great-granddaughter, Sarah Kalkowski of of Chapel Hill.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m., Monday, in Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Charles A. Joy. Memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity, in lieu of flowers. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements.
