CALI EMERGES FROM THE SHADOWS

When Whitney Cali was at Green Run High school she was the star of the girls soccer team.

She enjoyed being the go-to person when the team needed a lift. She expected to be recognized for her efforts.

And she was. She was a two-time All-Tidewater selection and was the Beach District Player of the Year her senior year. She was also named to the 1994 National Soccer Coaches of America Association All-America team.

Now the scenery has shifted to the campus of William and Mary, where Cali is in her second season season for the Tribe.

In her freshman year with the Tribe, Cali didn't see the kind of playing time that she saw with the Stallions. She took it in stride.

``It was pretty tough last year not playing and not being the star like I was in high school,'' Cali said. ``The players that were in front of me were better last year.

``It is tough when you come in because everyone on the team was the star in high school.''

All of that changed this season.

Cali, a sophomore, has emerged as a starting forward. She was named the CAA Player of the Week last week for the second time this season. She was also named second-team All-CAA.

Heading into the CAA tournament, Cali was second on the team in scoring. She has started 17 of 18 games and has 16 goals and three assists for 35 points.

Her 16 goals tie her with teammate Natalie Neaton for the team lead.
