JOHN M. PATTERSON

John Miller Patterson, 65, of Statesville and formerly of Norfolk, died Nov. 4, 1995, at Hill Haven Nursing Care, after a brief illness.

Mr. Patterson was born in Statesville, N.C., and was the son of the late John D. Patterson and Eugenia Miller Patterson. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, where he had served as a clerk of session, deacon and Sunday School teacher. He retired in 1992 from Darden College of Education, Old Dominion University and was appointed associate professor emeritus by the University. He was a member of the Children's Theatre Board. He served as a captain in the Air Force during the Korean War.

Mr. Patterson was a graduate of Statesville High School, Mitchell College in Statesville, and earned a bachelor's degree in distributive education from Richmond Professional Institute, a master's degree in education from VPI and his doctorate from Temple University.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Patterson Johnson and Erskine Johnson Jr. of Statesville; two nieces, Lynne Johnson Bebber of Troutman, N.C., and Barbara Johnson Neill of Mooresville, N.C.; five great-nieces and nephews, Matthew Bebber, Laura Bebber, Sarah Bebber, David Neill and Jamie Neill.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville, by Dr. E. Thomas Miller and the Rev. Steven E. Frazier. The body will remain at Nicholson Funeral Home and the family will assemble at the home, 614 Berkshire Drive, where they will receive friends anytime.
