SIX MORE DIE ON ROADS, BRINGING THIS YEAR'S FATALITY TOTAL TO 1,174

Six people were killed in accidents on North Carolina highways over the weekend, the state Highway Patrol said Sunday.

Gustave Ausbeck Sliger, 46, of Port Orange, Fla., was killed Saturday evening when his motorcycle crossed the center line and struck an oncoming car on U.S. 64 in Jackson County. The accident happened about 27 miles south of Sylva, troopers said.

Loretta Mauck Moody, 57, of Robbinsville, died Sunday after her car ran off U.S. 129 in Graham County and hit a utility box and a tree. The accident happened about 8:45 a.m. about five miles south of Robbinsville.

Annie Whitney German, 48, of Vanceboro, died Saturday morning after being hit by two cars while walking on N.C. 43 north of New Bern, the patrol said.

Jean Gowans of Virginia Beach was killed when she lost control of her car while trying to pass another vehicle on Interstate 95 in Wilson County, troopers said.

Dianna Bridges Kronsbein, 48, of Zebulon, died early Saturday after her car was hit by another car on N.C. 98 in Franklin County.

Steven Dale Burris, 30, of Concord, was killed Saturday when he lost control of his speeding car on state road 2635 in Cabarrus County.

The deaths bring the number of fatalities on state roads this year to 1,174, compared to 1,232 at this time last year.
