Most speckled trout fishermen never catch one of the handsome fish that weighs 7 pounds or more.
That's a big trout. It takes but a 5-pounder to win a citation award from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament.
Enter Robert ``Rob'' Scott Jr. of Chesapeake. Fishing on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, he boated a 7-12 speck on Tuesday. He returned Wednesday and boated a 9-9 trout. Both fish were tricked by live baits.
Then there's Archie Pittman Jr., also of Chesapeake. Also fishing on the Southern Branch on Wednesday, he boated an 8-8 speck.
Pittman also has the only other speckled trout bigger than Scott's 9-9 catch landed in Virginia this year. Early in the season he boated a 10-3 fish at Kiptopeke State Park, on the Eastern Shore. It's the current leader in the annual tournament.
Ivan Hutton III of Virginia Beach also deserves mention. Fishing at the ``Hot Ditch'' on the Southern Branch on Wednesday, he boated a 9-6 speck. That would be the heavyweight in the tourney many years.
James Eure of Chesapeake earned two citations from the Virginia tournament: He had a 10-8 tautog and a 9-3 gray trout while fishing at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
Elsewhere, after 30 years of serious fishing for largemouth bass, Scott Whitley of Chesapeake finally earned a citation award from the Virginia Fresh Water Fishing Program. He pulled a 7-4 prize from a private lake in Chesapeake.
Striped bass provided good action throughout Hampton Roads, with the best catches, as usual, along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. And big king mackerel staged a good showing off Hatteras on the Outer Banks, where Daron Slone of Black Mountain, N.C., boated a 69-pounder.
