Lessie Amsler Orr, died Nov. 6, 1995, in Virginia Beach.
Mrs. Orr was born May 24, 1899, in Leakesville, Miss., one of seven children of Frederick Anton and Flora MacLeod Amsler. She attended what is now Mississippi Southern University and upon graduation taught sixth grade in Pass Christian and McLain, Miss. After her marriage to George L. Orr, she lived and taught in Leake County, also in Mississippi. When her son was born, she quit teaching and devoted her time to caring for her family, adding volunteer work with the church, the Red Cross, the Republican Party, and civic groups.
Brought up a Presbyterian, she worked with the Methodist Church until she and her husband joined a small group in founding the Carthage Presbyterian Church. For more than 40 years, she was an energetic and much admired Sunday school teacher, teaching also at summer conferences of the synod. She was honored on her 18th birthday for the many years of devoted work on behalf of the church. She leaves a legacy of many grateful for her guidance and inspiration.
She moved to Virginia Beach in 1989 when it was no longer possible for her to live independently. Until her final illness, she retained her charm, good humor and wit. Despite her years, she had become a member of First Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, and often attended musical and social events at Virginia Wesleyan College.
She is survived by her son, L. Anderson Orr; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred Amsler of Gulfport, Miss.; and many nieces, nephews and friends whose lives are the richer for having known her and the poorer in her loss.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 8, 1995, at 2 p.m. at Old Donation Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Emmert and the Rev. Robert H. Warren officiating. Interment will be in the MacLeod-Magnolia Cemetery in Leakesville. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Norfolk Botanical Garden, Old Donation Church or the Virginia Wesleyan Capital Fund Drive. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, are handling arrangements.
