Dave Simons lost a bid for mayor, and Doug Brinkley was elected to the Town Council from District A. People throughout the Albemarle area will vote in local elections today. Mayors and town council members are being elected in Chowan, Gates, Hertford, Perquimans and Dare counties.

Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. throughout northeastern North Carolina.

CHOWAN COUNTY

Edenton: Alton Elmore and Roland Vaughan oppose each other for mayor of Edenton.

Roy Harrell and Don Latham are running for 2nd Ward.

Steve Biggs and Marina Crummy are opposed for council-at-large.

Jimmy Alligood is unopposed in the 1st Ward.

GATES COUNTY

Gatesville: Incumbent Elton L. Winslow is running unopposed for mayor.

Three candidates are running for three seats on the Town Council: incumbents C.H. Carter III and Wade W. Hobbs, and newcomer Paul Miller.

HERTFORD COUNTY

Ahoskie: Dave Simmons and Arthur Lee Wiggins are running for mayor.

Doug Brinkly and Guerry Goode are vying for one Town Council seat in District A.

J. Andrew Hunter is running unopposed for a Town Council seat in District B.

Cofield: Julia Whitaker is running unopposed for mayor.

Horace Spivey, Cecil Combo, Hermea Pugh Sr., Herbert D. Smith and Walter E. Jones are running unopposed for five Town Council seats.

Como: Danny D. Edwards is running unopposed for mayor.

Irvin Stevens Sr., Helen Curle, John K. Wheeler and Stephen F. Pearce are running unopposed for four Town Council seats.

Harrellsville: Richard Baker Jr. is running unopposed for mayor.

Jerry F. Mabry, Coleman Taylor, Deborah A. Baker, Robert Dantz and Thomas W. Britt are running unopposed for five Town Council seats.

Murfreesboro: W.W. ``Billy'' Hill, Herbert C. Eley and Robert W. Carr are vying for mayor.

Five candidates are running for five seats on the Town Council: William C. Parker, Bill Theadorakis, Jack A. Hassell, Jacob Ruffin Jr. and John Gaitten.

Winton: Marshall Askew is running unopposed for mayor.

Running for five Town Council seats are Wesley Liverman, William M. Pierce, Bernard Moore, Charles B. Jones and Calvin S. Hall.

PERQUIMANS COUNTY

Hertford: John Beers, the mayor, is unopposed for his seat.

Five candidates are running for two seats on the City Council: Billy L. Winslow, incumbent; William Cox; Carlyn L. Brown; G. Eldon Winslow, Barbara Sheeley.

Winfall: C.D. Barclift will try to unseat Mayor Fred Yates.

Jack Chesson, Lloyd R. Morgan, Carol Cooper and Clifford P. Towe are seeking two seats on the City Council.

DARE COUNTY

Manteo: Council member Lee Tugwell is running against former mayor John Wilson IV for mayor.

Eight people are seeking election to three seats on the town's Board of Commissioners: Mayor Bill Buell, former Mayor Mollie Fearing, Melvin Jackson, Terry McDowell, Sarah Owens, J. Bowen ``Bo'' Ross Jr., Stuart Wescott and Bebe B. Woody.

Nags Head: Five candidates are seeking two open seats on the town Board of Commissioners: George Farah, incumbent Wayne Gray, Doug Remaley, Charles B. Thompson and incumbent Harry J. Thompson Jr.

Kill Devil Hills: Mayor Terry Gray is running against Councilman Duncan Wright for mayor.

Eight people are running for two open seats on the Board of Commissioners, incumbent Lurana Cowan, former mayor Joe Deneke, Jimmy Dean Hanks, Jackie Lee Harris, George ``Buck'' Marks, Rex E. Meads, incumbent Bill Morris Jr., and Jeff Shields.

Kitty Hawk: Two members of the Town Council are seeking re-election. Mayor Clifton Perry is running with Councilman Carl Parrott. Council members elect the mayor.

Southern Shores: Five candidates are seeking election to three open seats: incumbent Gerald J. Beshens, William ``Scott'' Fletcher, Robert Kenan Jr., Mayor Kern P. Pitts and incumbent Dick R. Wood. Council members elect the mayor.
