A tractor-trailer collided with a Machipongo Middle School bus Monday afternoon on Route 13 south, sending 38 students and the bus driver to Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital with injuries.
State police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said none of the injuries - mainly broken bones - appeared to be life-threatening.
The accident occurred at 3:15 p.m. about a mile south of Eastville on the Eastern Shore.
Van Dame said the tractor-trailer hit the school bus in the rear after the bus stopped to let a student off.
The Perdue trailer was being pulled by a truck belonging to Smallwood Trucking Co. of Windsor, N.C., Van Dame said.
The bus driver, Doris J. Walton of Cape Charles, was slightly injured.
The truck driver, Lloyd A. Hendrix of Windsor was charged with reckless driving. Both drivers were wearing safety belts, Van Dame said.
