The Nansemond River field hockey team outscored Bruton 6-5 in three rounds of penalty strokes to win the Bay Rivers District tournament championship Monday at York High School.
The teams finished regulation in a 1-1 tie, went scoreless in two fifteen minute sudden death overtimes and were deadlocked at four going into the third round of penalty strokes.
Heather Behrends and Kari Harrell blasted shots past Panthers goalie Cristen Zanca to give the Warriors (13-3) their first Bay Rivers tournament title. Nansemond River, which also won the regular season crown, earned a bid to the state invitational tournament Saturday at Fauquier High in Warrenton.
``Absolutely nobody deserved to lose this game,'' Nansemond River coach Bucky Payton said. ``I wish (Bruton coach Donald Samuels) and I weren't such good friends when something like this happens. I really feel bad for Bruton.''
Goalie Carrie Morgan turned away eight shots in the shootouts in near-darkness for the Warriors.
``I'm glad we were playing with an orange ball,'' Morgan said. ``If it was any other color there's no way either of us would have been able to see.''
Bruton (7-6-1) opened the scoring in the first half when Lauren Artusio tapped in a pass from Shannon Farino 10 minutes in. Nansemond River answered with 14 seconds left before halftime on Melissa Johnson's unassisted goal. by CNB
