MAURY FACES KEMPSVILLE IN TOURNAMENT MATCHUP

Southeastern District regular-season champion Maury entered the Eastern Region tournament with an opening-round matchup against Beach District tournament runner-up Kempsville.

The Commodores (8-5, 7-1 Eastern District) had been idle for a week while the rest of the district teams battled for the tournament title. Booker T. Washington (8-2) emerged the victor and opened regional play against Beach winner Salem (17-3) Monday night.

``It's very, very hard,'' Maury coach Margaret Carlson said of the week's layoff. ``We're in the process of hopefully changing that. Next year I'm hoping they'll drop fifth place and let the top four play.''

Regardless, Carlson is positive entering Monday's matchup.

``Our outlook is positive,'' Carlson said. ``We've worked hard, practiced hard and we're looking to get a little respect for the district.''

Carlson is looking for strong games from Paige Griffin, Oksana Bouhktina, Elmer Rojas and Rachel Rashti in their tournament debut.

``We're serving harder,'' Carlson said. ``We're getting some strong front-line play. Volleyball is such a mental game, I think it just depends on whoever is really on and I'm hoping we're on.''

CROSS COUNTRY UPDATE: Maury's Sara Frueh ran a personal best (20:42) in the Eastern Region cross country meet as the Commodore's girls team qualified for Saturday's state meet in Warrenton at the Great Meadows Course.

``It was close,'' said Maury coach Walt Green, whose team finished fourth. ``We knew it was going to be a five-team race with one good team left out. I just hope we can finish in the top 10 at state. We're going to have to run a good team race. There can be no more than a minute spread between our top finisher and our fifth if we're going to be successful.''

D.J. Williams' 10th-place finish was good enough to earn him a trip to the state tournament as the Commodores' lone representative from the boys team.

RUGBY: The Norfolk City Blues completed a clean sweep of the fall season last weekend in Roanoke as the Blues won their sixteenth Ed Lee Cup at the Virginia Rugby Union playoffs. The Blues are now on the road to the National Championships after clinching their 14th VRU regular season crown in 16 years and their ninth regional title in 17 years with a 9-0 record.
