Your article ``The headache business'' (Sept. 12) was informative and accurate. However, there was no information about local headache programs.
Southeastern Virginia is fortunate to have the Headache Institute at Maryview Medical Center. This multidisciplinary program teaches people to get in touch with their healing ability by connecting the mind, body and spirit in combination with traditional medical management. Dr. David Biondi, a board-certified neurologist, is the medical director. The other team members are a physical therapist, occupational therapist, pharmacist, psychologist, pastoral care and skilled-nursing staff.
When our patients complete this program, they understand physical-exercise benefits, nutritional factors which trigger headaches, effective stress management, assertive decision-making and proper use of medications.
Although in most cases headaches cannot be totally eliminated, the number and intensity can be reduced. By eliminating some of the known factors that act as triggers and, where needed, the appropriate use of preventive and symptomatic medications, people can better function in their daily activities.
Maryview Headache Institute is located at 3636 High St., Portsmouth.
