John R. Taylor Jr., one of the artists whose work is in the 1995 Suffolk Art League annual Juried Exhibition, specializes in landscapes.
``I like old buildings and fences. I see a lot of color in broken-down houses,'' he said. ``I prefer landscapes over still life. It's more relaxing, therapeutic.''
Many people agree with him, including Symmes Gardner, juror for the Art League's annual Juried Exposition.
Symmes, director of programs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said the Art League selections are based on ``the artist's perception of nature as an intimate form.''
``These works attempted to clarify the strong character of a particular geography, which surrounds each of its makers,'' he said. ``There is a powerful sense of land, both in its natural state and inhabited by people.''
Symmes awarded Shikha Sarkar of Suffolk first prize for her oil painting, ``Colorfield No. 1,'' a large format offering with a blue band at the top and large patches of gold highlighted with greens, oranges and purples.
He said the modern painting ``brings images of flying over a Kansas farm.''
As part of her award, the artist will present a one-woman show next summer.
Second prize honors went to Cynthia Rector Jones of Norfolk for her mixed media work, ``Among Angels.''
Pat Bohon, another Suffolk artist was third prize winner for her watercolor, ``Hydrangeas.'' MEMO: The Suffolk Art League Juried Exhibition continues through Nov. 26 at
