PHELPS IS RE-ELECTED SHERIFF IN ISLE OF WIGHT

Isle of Wight County Sheriff C.W. ``Charlie'' Phelps celebrated his landslide re-election at the Carrollton Ruritan Club.

Phelps pulled in 4,820 votes, more than half of the total, compared to 2,268 for Shelton Spivey and 925 for William T. ``Billy'' Chrisman.

``I congratulate Sheriff Phelps,'' Spivey said late Tuesday. ``He has my best wishes. He was a very strong candidate.''

Spivey said he had learned a lot during the election and enjoyed meeting so many county residents.

Windsor Mayor Robert C. ``Bobby'' Claud won the only contested race for the county Board of Supervisors.

``I certainly pledge to serve Windsor and Isle of Wight County citizens to the best of my ability,'' Claud said.

Claud will step down as mayor of Windsor in December, and the Town Council will select a member of the community to fill the vacant council seat after Vice Mayor Wesley Garris moves in as mayor.

Elected unopposed were W. Parker Councill, commonwealth's attorney; Revenue Commissioner Gerald H. Gwaltney; Treasurer Beryl H. Perry; and Supervisors Malcom T. ``Mac'' Cofer of the Smithfield District and O.A. Spady of the Newport District. by CNB
