TONIGHT'S FOOTBALL GAMES

Two powerful forces of motivation - the quest for perfection and desperation - collide tonight when top-ranked Deep Creek visits No. 3 Western Branch for the Southeastern District championship and top-seeding in the Division 5 playoffs.

The Hornets, ranked No. 21 in the USA Today Super 25, can complete a second consecutive 10-0 regular-season with a victory over the Bruins. Deep Creek, 6-0 in the district, already has a playoff spot.

``It's the same old story for us,'' Deep Creek coach Jerry Carter said. ``Every time we go on the field someone wants to knock us off.

``These kids know what's at stake: an undefeated season, the championship and the No. 1 seed. I don't have to preach.''

Western Branch (8-1, 6-0) is enjoying its best season in nearly two decades, but must win to secure the title and guarantee itself a spot in the playoffs.

The Division 6 playoff picture focuses on the Beach District where Kempsville visits Green Run, Tallwood visits First Colonial and Salem plays host to Cox.

Green Run (9-0, 8-0) has already clinched the district title and top seed in Division 6. Salem (6-3, 6-2) needs a victory to stay in the running and can secure a playoff spot if Kempsville or Tallwood lose.

If both teams win the Sun Devils can still get in if they beat Cox and Indian River loses to Oscar Smith on Friday night. MEMO: [For a copy of the game schedule and Pilot Picks, see microfilm for this
