Bayside and Tabb survived the first round of the Eastern Region field hockey tournament Wednesday at Cox, advancing to today's semifinal round.
Tabb (13-3) earned the unenviable right to face six-time defendng Group AAA champion Cox (16-0) in today's noon semi, while the defending state runner-up Marlins will face Maury (11-3) at 2 p.m.
Peninsula District champion Tabb defeated Eastern runner-up Lake Taylor 3-0 in the first quarterfinal, while Bayside edged Lafayette 2-0.
Today's winners advance to Friday's 2 p.m. championship and next week's state championship at Fairfax's Oakton High.
The Tabb jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead on the Titans (10-3) on a pair of goals by Stephanie Rader and one by Jennifer Hespe. Hespe assisted on Rader's goals. But Tabb suffered from complaisancy in the second.
``And we talked about that,' coach Paul Kirby said. ``And I think part of it was that Lake Taylor stepped up its game.
Bayside (15-2) entered the game with a team goal of getting as many penalty corners as possible and succeeded with an overwhelming 22-2 advantage. But the Marlins had trouble finishing.
``It was getting frustrating,'' said Crystal Pickett, who finally put her team on the board with 21 minutes left in the game by tapping in a nice crossing pass from Dawn Bell.
``It just wasn't going in for us at all until we finally settled down.''
With 1:26 left, Bell netted the insurance when she nailed a close-range shot of Lafayette (9-4) keeper Tara Manson.
``I guess our goal for tomorrow will have to be numerous goals off numerous corners,'' Bayside coach Kathy Mustain said.
``We were trying some different things today and i took us a while to adjust.
``But we just didn't finish when we had the opportunities and you can``t do that at this level.'' by CNB
