It was a fairly quiet victory party thrown by Portsmouth Democrats Tuesday night. After all,the majority of the General Assembly candidates in Portsmouth were expected to win and did. And the only tight race, remained uncertain until long after the party was over.
Johnny Joannou was on edge after he finally did arrive. He announced that the race was too close to call and that he would be ``hanging in'' until the final precincts came in. Quayle declared victory at some point in the night, but Joannou, never did concede defeat. He said he was going home to bed before the final precinct tallies were available.
The Portsmouth winners were L. Louise Lucas in the 18th Senatorial District who was throwing her own party at her campaign headquarters; William S. ``Billy'' Moore in the 79th district and Kenneth W. Melvin in the 80th district.
Over at another location, Republicans were even quieter. Early on, F.E. ``Dutch'' Andrews Jr. learned that he had not come close to ousting Melvin. Dan D.R. ``Dan'' Evans stayed away from the party until late although his family was there in force and for incumbent Sen. Fred Quayle, who district covers a lot of territory, the Portsmouth party was but one stop. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by MARK MITCHELL
