SEMIFINALS FOR 120- AND 140-POUNDERS START SATURDAY

They're heading for a showdown in the Virginia Beach Department of Parks and Recreation youth football city playoffs. It may not be the Super Bowl, but it's just as big for the 120- and 140-pounders who will start the action with semifinals at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Princess Anne Park.

The championships are set for Nov. 18 at Princess Anne.

The 120-pound Kings Grant Vikings (6-2) will face the unbeaten Woodstock Mustangs (8-0) in the first of two semi-final games on field 6. The Bayside Steelers (6-2) face another unbeaten team, the (8-0) Larkspur/Salem Lions, in the 10:45 game. The two winners will meet for the city championship the following Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

At the same times on field 5, the 140-pound Bayside Rams (6-2) challenge the (7-1) Courthouse Tigers and the undefeated Woodstock Rams (8-0) meet the Larkspur/Salem Lions (5-3) for a shot at the title game next Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

Longtime Woodstock coach George Lattimore's team held the opposition to a total of three touchdowns for the season, while averaging about three a game themselves.

``We may not have the gifted athletes we've had in the past,'' said Lattimore, who coached current NFL players Matt Darby and Keith Goganious. ``Our boys worked very hard and played well as a team.

``Corey Trusty showed a lot of leadership at quarterback, and Jovon Sanderlin, our running back, scored most of our touchdowns.''

Lattimore also mentioned the efforts of offensive and defensive end Kevin McElroy, the fullback/linebacker tandem of Tremon Hawkins and Dante Taylor and two-way tackle Mario Bankston.

Although Woodstock beat the Larkspur/Salem Lions, 14-0, during the regular-season, Lattimore has warned his players not to become complacent.

``Coach (Jimmy) Gilbert will have his team ready, you can believe that,'' he said.

The Bayside Rams showed coach Ray Ruffin that his confidence in them was justified. After their opening day win, Ruffin said his team ``was coming together and I think we can take it all.''
