Every year since 1918, our country has set Nov. 11 aside as Veteran's Day. Many choose to travel or take care of much-needed yard and house work. Some just stay at home and relax. But many will visit cemeteries and national monuments and lay flowers and wreaths.
Washington, D.C., will be descended on by many thousands to visit the Vietnam memorial. The Korean War memorial, which is new, will draw many, possibly looking for a familiar buddy.
In the wars and conflicts, many veterans spent this holiday in far-off lands - in foxholes, in field hospitals, many in pain with limbs missing. Many in unmarked graves.
As our nation still stands free due to the price they paid, let's honor them. Let's observe Nov. 11 as an early Thanksgiving to the many who paid such a high price.
