GIRL SCOUT FOUNDER TOOK LESSONS FROM BOY SCOUT FOUNDER

JULIETTE GORDON LOW founded Girl Scouting after learning that her friend Sir Robert (later Lord) Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scout movement. The first meeting was held in Savannah, Ga., on March 12, 1912.

Over the years it has become a well-respected organization. The Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast, which provides for local troops, is one of about 330 Girl Scout councils nationwide. The local council alone has about 1,500 active troops and 15,000 Scouts.

Daisy scouts are kindergarten age. Brownies range in age from 6 to 8 years old. Juniors are between 8 and 11, and Cadettes are between 11 and 14. Seniors Scouts are ages 14 through 17.

At 17, girls may choose to ``bridge up'' to being an adult scout. At this level they can become volunteers or troop leaders.

For information on joining a Girl Scout troop or being an adult volunteer, call 486-9737. Scout uniforms have come a long way since 1912

Gone are the days of green on green on green with a beret on top.

Girl Scout uniforms have come a long way since 1912. This year the national council updated the Cadette and Senior uniforms.

The new design is based on a nationwide survey of nearly 700 scouts and leaders. It features a vibrant blue and heather gray color scheme. Pieces include sweat shirts, T-shirts and the more traditional skirt and shirt combos. There is also a new sash and cap in royal blue.

Accessories include heather gray hiking socks with blue accents. Cadette Girl Scouts wear royal blue bandanas and Senior Girl Scouts wear yellow bandanas to sort of polish the casual look of the updated uniforms.

This is the fifth time that the Cadette uniform has been updated since the level was started in 1963. In 1938 the Senior level was introduced. That uniform has been updated eight times. MEMO: Appeared as side bar to main story ILLUSTRATION: Photos by Girl Scouts
