OPERATION SMILE TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL

LOCAL TV news and notes to consider while you wait for Saturday night's ``Comic Relief'' salute to the old ``Steve Allen Show'' on HBO at 9:

These angels are doctors and nurses - Operation Smile, which has expanded to 29 chapters from home base in Norfolk, is featured in Saturday night's episode of ``Touched by an Angel'' on CBS at 9. The organization has arranged reconstructive surgery for children in 13 countries.

The CBS series, which features Della Reese and Roma Downey as angels helping the earthbound sort out their troubles, brightens the lives of three disfigured Panamanian children on Saturday's show.

Apprentice angel Monica (Downey) starts the plot rolling when she plays baby sitter to a child with a cleft palate. Operation Smile's Nashville, Tenn., chapter is featured.

Did somebody say Nashville? What a segue - Joe Hoppel, the WCMS-FM morning deejay who has been on the radio in this market for four decades, gets a little national exposure today at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Hoppel and his wake-up partner, Chris Mitchell, will banter with Ralph Emery of The Nashville Network. That's cable.

TNN plans to beam about six minutes of the WCMS-FM morning show to Nashville from Nauticus in downtown Norfolk. Hoppel's contemporaries such as Paul Hennings, Bob Calvert and Roger Clark left the radio scene here years ago, but Hoppel goes on and on and on.

The show with Vanna on it seems like more fun - Ever since the ``Wheel of Fortune'' folks were in Norfolk last year to audition contestants, a handful of locals have won big money on that game show. Now comes news that we're also cashing in on ``Jeopardy!,'' seen weeknights on WVEC.

The answer: Won $22,600 in cash and prizes on ``Jeopardy!'' The question: Who is Navy Lt. Tim Adams of Virginia Beach? Adams, stationed aboard the carrier Enterprise, appears on ``Jeopardy!'' for a third and last time Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Maybe Jake will show him how to have buns of steel - Robert James, who hosted and helped produce ``Buz TV'' on WTKR until the new owners dropped the weekly show that covered the local entertainment scene, has landed another job in television.

James will leave soon for Los Angeles to join Jake (``Body by Jake'') Steinfeld on the Cable Health Club or FIT-TV. ``Buz TV'' was local TV at its best.

The voice of the readers - Charlene Chamblee, who is 16 and lives in Suffolk, reached me on Infoline (640-5555, Category 3333) with this comment: ``Am I the only one who has noticed that Tempestt Bledsoe is not the right person to host a talk show? She is so annoying.'' I also noticed, Charlene.

Updating the schedule - WTKR recently moved ``Coast Guard'' from 12:30 p.m. to noon on Sundays. It's often about locally based units saving folks in rough weather. ``A Current Affair'' has a new home weeknights at 11 on WVBT just before Lauren Hutton's talk show.

If you think Tempestt is annoying, Charlene, you should see Lauren's show. One guest. One host. Tedium. by CNB
