MATTIE CUMBER

Mattie Cumber, of the 1000 block of Baltimore St., died Nov. 7, 1995, in a local hospital.

She was a retired cook for the Norfolk Naval Base, where she worked for over 20 years. She was a native of Burgaw, N.C., and was the widow of Walter Cumber. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, where she was involved in the Senior Choir, Senior Usher Board (NU)1, and the Ladies Auxiliaries. She was also a member of Titus Town Senior Citizens Council Association.

She is survived by a stepson, Roger Prentis of Richmond; brother, Alexander Hayes of Norfolk; a devoted niece, Vivian English; and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Helen Newkirk Hayes and L.P. Hayes.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Keith Cook in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Burial is in Roosevelt Memorial Park. She bore her illness with patience realizing that she had her cousin, Shirley Grant, providing tender loving care for her. The family will receive friends at 3305 Dunkirk Ave., Norfolk. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.
