BOY, 7, DIES AND 5 OTHERS INJURED IN HEAD-ON CRASH

A 7-year-old resident of this Outer Banks fishing village was killed, and five other people were injured Wednesday night, in a two-car, head-on crash on N.C. Route 345.

Those hurt ranged from 12 to 20 years old.

Zachariah Levi Hayes was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred at about 8:10 p.m.

The youngster was a passenger in a 1984 Ford Ranger pickup driven by his 16-year-old brother, Ezekiel Roscoe Hayes. Ezekiel Hayes was injured and transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was treated and discharged, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Hayes' truck collided with a 1990 Chevrolet Corsica driven by Aletia Meekins, 17, of Wanchese.

Three passengers in Meekins' vehicle - 20-year-old Kevin Lee Goudy of Manteo; Meekins' brother Jacob Meekins, 12, and her sister Jessica Meekins, 15, both of Wanchese - also were hurt.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, State Trooper Al Joyner said Thursday.

``The only thing we know for sure right now is that it was a head-on collision,'' Joyner said.

Passengers in both vehicles apparently were not wearing seat belts, Joyner said.

``This is a sad thing,'' said the trooper. ``All of them are so young.''

The three Meekins children were listed in stable condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Thursday evening.

Goudy was taken to Outer Banks Medical Center, and later transferred to Chesapeake General Hospital, where he was treated in the emergency room and released.
