Old Dominion warmed up just in time to hand Virginia a 2-1 overtime loss Thursday at Foreman Field in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The sixth-ranked Lady Monarchs (16-8) fought off the No. 9 Cavaliers (13-9) and the brisk night air to advance to Sunday's 1 p.m. second-round match against host Maryland.
Danielle Chellew blasted an ODU corner with 20 seconds remaining in the seven-player 15-minute overtime to ice the victory.
``I'm excited,'' said Chellew, whose team lost 2-1 in overtime to Virginia earlier this season. ``We've got a second chance, and we're taking that to Maryland.''
Chellew's goal came 51:04 after neither team had scored, despite numerous chances on both sides. The Lady Monarchs outshot the Cavaliers, 14-12, and held an 11-5 corner advantage.
``I give Virginia a lot of credit,'' ODU coach Beth Anders said. ``They defended us very well. Our corners were dangerous, but they just didn't go in.''
Virginia freshman Kara Ariza gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead when she scored her first collegiate goal by beating keeper Kim Decker to the center of the net with 2:47 to play in the first half.
But a little more than a minute later, the Lady Monarchs charged back when Kelly Driscoll dove after a Dani Derr pass and pushed the ball into the corner of the net.
``I thought the momentum was finally going our way,'' Ariza said. ``But they came right back at us when we were vulnerable.''
Both teams' goals followed what appeared to be an early ODU lead. However, officials ruled Chellew's corner shot at the 15:57 mark too high.
``We practice our corners enough times,'' Chellew said. ``It's just a matter of executing and everyone doing their part to put it in.'' ILLUSTRATION: TAMARA VONINSKI/ The Virginian-Pilot
