HISTORY'S HERE IN HAMPTON ROADS

As a former Suffolk resident and educator, I am grateful to the Allen administration for the emphasis it is placing on preserving Virginia's history and making it more available to our children. Specifically, I commend it on the ``Teaching with Historic Places'' program and the recently announced decision to locate a regional Department of Historic Resources office in Portsmouth.

The collaborative efforts of the Department of Historic Resources and the Department of Education will advance the use of historic places as teaching aids for history and other subjects. There is no better way to ``make history live'' for our young people than to actually use the many nationally historic sites that are unique to Virginia.

I am especially impressed by the number of workshops which have been held to teach public-school instructors how to incorporate the ``Teaching with Historic Places'' program into their lessons. This exciting approach to history instruction, along with a Historic Resources office in the vicinity, makes children of the Hampton Roads area especially fortunate.
