Paul Elliott Fisher has been named the city's new planning director. He will begin Nov. 15. Fisher replaces Robert Baldwin, who is now the city's long-range planner.
Fisher, a Suffolk resident, recently held the position of director of legislative and information services for the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission. Fisher has 22 years of experience in environmental planning, legislative and intergovernmental program management, and project management and administration.
He also has held positions as director of environmental and physical planning with the Peninsula Planning District Commission, project director and project administrator with the Hampton Roads Water Quality Agency, and he has worked as a city planner with Virginia Beach.
Fisher said he wants to work with citizens to preserve the city's character.
``Suffolk is facing its most challenging period over the next two or three years as the City Council and staff plan and manage growth. . . . It is important that we continue to recognize the values and concerns of the residents as we plan for the future.''
Fisher earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University and a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. by CNB
