F. COLONIAL'S KANNARKAT SUFFERS TENNIS LOSS

Mily Kannarkat's bid for a second consecutive state Group AAA singles title ended in the state semifinals Friday afternoon at Prince George High.

Kannarkat, a sophomore from First Colonial who had never lost a high school match, suffered a 6-3, 5-7, 1-6 loss to Bridget Bruner of Douglas Freeman, who came into the tournament with a 12-2 record. The defeat gave Kannarkat a 17-1 season record and a career mark of 44-1.

Joining Kannarkat on the sidelines was the area's other entry, Leslie Beach of Tallwood. Beach (17-3) won her quarterfinal match over previously undefeated Lulu Rodriguez of North Stafford 6-2, 6-3, then dropped a 6-4, 4-6, 2-6 decision to Caryn Cuthbert of Yorktown.

Although Kannarkat is out of the running for the singles title, she is a member of one of the two First Colonial doubles teams which advanced to the state semifinal round. Kannarkat and Anne Crenshaw (11-1) notched a 7-5, 6-1 win over Priya Acharya and Kristen Beeler of Pulaski in the quarterfinals and Patriot teammates Laura Bridges and Katy Walters (14-1) advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jessica Olingy and Natalie Smith of Albemarle.

Kannarkat and Crenshaw face Freeman's Bruner and Becky Gunn (12-1), and Bridges and Walters will take on Kelly Smith and Jenny Ward of Mills Godwin (14-3) in the semifinals at noon. The championship match will be played at 3 p.m.
