INDIAN RIVER CLINCHES THE NO. 3 SEED IN DIVISION 6

Junior James Boyd ran for a touchdown, passed for a score and returned an interception for a third TD as Indian River routed Oscar Smith 43-14 Friday night and clinched the No. 3 seed in the Division 6 playoffs.

The Braves' win settled the division playoff pairings. Indian River (8-2) will play second-seeded Tallwood (8-2) at Princess Anne Nov. 17 in one semifinal and top-seeded Green Run (10-0) will play fourth-seeded Kempsville (7-3) at Kellam in the other.

Although Boyd intercepted three passes, it was a theft by Lance Bishop which broke open what had been a tight game. Bishop picked off a Tiger pass and took it back 55 yards for a touchdown, snapping a 14-14 tie with 1:01 left in the first half. The Braves (5-2 in the Southeastern District) ran off 29 unanswered points in putting Oscar Smith (5-5, 3-4) away.

Indian River scored four touchdowns on plays of 43 yards or longer. In addition to Bishop's interception return, Boyd took his interception back 58 yards and Anthony Cason ran 61 yards for one touchdown and caught a 43-yard pass from Boyd for another.

NORFOLK - Russell Carter had 14 carries for 235 yards and four touchdowns as Norfolk Academy ended a three-game skid and finished unbeaten in the TCIS.

``We've had a tough go the last three games,'' said Academy coach Tom York. ``But the team played well tonight.''

Leading 13-0 at the half, the Bulldogs (6-3, 4-0, ranked third in the state Division III private school poll), sandwiched a pair of Carter touchdown runs around a 5-yard touchdown reception by Hunter Sims and 26-yard interception return for a score by Josh Raper for a 41-0 cushion.

Carter scored on runs of 1 and 48 yards in the first half as the Academy defense stiffened each time the Crusaders (2-7, 1-3) threatened. Carter also had touchdown runs of 55 and 46 yards in the third quarter.
