ODU PLAYS ITS FINAL EXHIBITION GAME TONIGHT

Old Dominion's basketball team leaves for Alaska in nine days and opens the season in 12 against Duke in the Great Alaska Shootout.

Tonight marks the Monarchs' last dry run in the contiguous 48. ODU will play its final exhibition against Court Authority at 7:35 at the ODU field house.

``It's real important that we start to develop continuity and our execution has to be better,'' ODU coach Jeff Capel said.

E.J. Sherod will start at shooting guard against his father, Edmund Sherod, a former star at Virginia Commonwealth who plays for Court Authority. Duffy Samuels will start at point guard as Capel gets one last look in a game setting at how different combinations of players work together.

ODU's coaches are looking for a better performance than the one in their other exhibition against an overmatched Latvia Select team Wednesday. ODU won by 40 and played well in spurts in that game, but Capel was not pleased with a few lapses in intensity.

``We've got to do a much better job defensively,'' Capel said. ``We've got to be patient offensively and let the game develop. And we've got to learn to react to the defense and not force things.'' by CNB
