The unexpected loss of its top runner didn't stop the Great Bridge boys cross country team from defending its Southeastern District and Eastern Region titles, and the Wildcats insist it won't deter them from posting another top-five finish during the Group AAA state cross country championships today at Great Meadow near Warrenton.
The Wildcats, third in the state a year ago, appeared to take a major hit when Mike Donnelly, South Hampton Roads' top finisher at the 1994 state meet, moved with his family to Fairfax. But while Donnelly's absence probably ended Great Bridge's dream of a 1995 state title, it has also showcased the depth that has kept the Wildcats among Virginia's best teams.
``If we still had Mike? Oooh, yeah . . . we'd be right there,'' Eastern Region boys champion Eric Adams said. ``But we were deep in talent with freshmen and sophomores last year. When Mike left, a lot of that talent moved up.''
Great Bridge's bid could hinge on the health of No. 3 runner Jason Santucci, whose hip injury forced him to withdraw from last week's regional meet.
West Springfield, ranked among the top 10 teams in the country by one publication, is the favorite for team honors. The Spartans' lead runner, Sharif Karie, is expected to take the individual crown.
In the girls race, Tallwood's Pam Edwards, fresh from her stirring victory in the regional meet, and 1994 region champ Adrienne Parker of Kempsville are the area's strongest individual contenders. Action begins at 10:30 a.m. by CNB
