VANGUILDER, ROBINS SHARE CAPTAIN'S ROLE

NANSEMOND-SUFFOLK SENIOR Jill VanGuilder and Norfolk Academy junior Kendra Robins have been named the honorary captains of the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools girls basketball all-league squad, as chosen by the league's coaches.

VanGuilder guided the Saints to a perfect regular season finish and was just outside the conference scoring leaders with 11 points per game.

It was the third year in a row that VanGuilder has made the all-TCIS first team. She shared the TCIS honorary captain honor with Robins because they finished in a tie in the balloting.

Robins, the leading vote-getter on the 1994 team, averaged 16.4 points and led the Bulldogs to a third place regular season finish behind Nansemond-Suffolk and Norfolk Collegiate.

Robins showcased her talent in the tournament final against the Saints as she dazzled the crowd with a buzzer-beating layup that gave Norfolk Academy a 49-48 overtime victory and its first post-season crown since 1988.

Robins and VanGuilder were joined on the first team by Ann Murden of N-SA and Norfolk Christian's Jacquie Macklem, who both earned all-conference awards for the second year.

Norfolk Collegiate junior Elizabeth Swearingen, the team's only newcomer, rounds out the selections.

Murden led the Saints in scoring and ranked eighth in the league with 12.8 points per game.

Macklem, a 5-foot-9 guard, was the Ambassadors' playmaker as well as one of the conference's most dangerous outside shooters. Macklem was second in league scoring behind Peninsula Catholic's Lindsey Carney with 20.04 points a game.

Swearingen helped the Oaks, who proved to be the league's darkhorse, pull off an upset victory over Norfolk Academy in the final week of the season for an 8-1 finish. Swearingen averaged 10 points a game.

Named to the second team were Norfolk Academy senior Angie Hucles, also the tournament's most valuable player and two-time Virginian-Pilot soccer player of the year; Walsingham junior Katherine Julian; Julie Tebault, a Norfolk Collegiate senior; Peninsula Catholic junior Lindsey Carney; and N-SA senior Lea Wilson.

Earning honorable mention were Sara Curbow of Hampton Roads Academy; Catholic's Samantha Green; Greenbrier Academy's Katie Sherwood; Norfolk Academy's Kate Rowen; Walsingham's Courtney Naparlo; N-SA's Allison Dunn; and Cape Henry's Summer Foster. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
