John Henry Slaughter Jr., 87, of the 8300 block of Kanter Ave., died Nov. 11, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mr. Slaughter was born in Norfolk and had retired from the Norfolk Transit Co. as a trolley car conductor and later as a supervisor of buses. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary M. Slaughter. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, where he served on the board of deacons, served as an elder, and sang in the choir for many years. He was a member of the Norfolk Host Lions Club, Owens Masonic Lodge No. 164, the Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies, and was a former member of the masonic funeral committee.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Mildred Joyner Slaughter; two daughters, Mary Ann S. French of Chesapeake, and Frances Jane Dunfield of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Beverly S. Leech of Lancaster, Pa.; five grandchildren, Heidi L. French of Chesapeake, Jonathan Dunfield of Norfolk, Patrick Dunfield of Palm Coast, Fla., Meredith Leech of Alexandria, Va., and Bruce Leech III of Lancaster.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 1995, in Knox Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Ewing Brown and the Rev. James H. Nowell. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home from 3 to 4 p.m. today to receive friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
