NORFOLK POLICE NAB SUSPECTS WANTED IN ROBBERY OF BANK

Alert police officers on routine patrol Saturday morning spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a bank robbery that had occurred a short time earlier. They gave chase and eventually caught the suspects.

Police said the First Virginia Bank branch in the 1000 block of Fishermans Road in the Bayview section of the city was held up about 9:20 a.m.

A man entered the bank, implied that he had a weapon and demanded cash. He fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and jumped into a waiting Chevrolet Blazer, which sped off.

A short time later, two officers on patrol near Bayview Boulevard and Wayland Street spotted a Blazer matching the description of the vehicle used in the robbery.

When they approached the Blazer and attempted to stop it, it took off.

A short pursuit ended in the 4800 block of Woolsey St., where the two suspects bailed out of the Blazer and ran.

The two police officers jumped out of their cruiser and chased the suspects through the neighborhood, finally catching both of them in the 5000 block of Krick St. at 9:42 a.m.

Charged with bank robbery are Eric D. Taylor, 27, of Memphis, Tenn., a sailor stationed aboard the tender L.Y. Spear; and a 15-year-old boy from Brooklyn, N.Y.

Police said the teenager, who was not identified because of his age, was in the area visiting relatives. It was unclear Saturday how the teen and Taylor knew each other.

Taylor was being held without bond in the City Jail Saturday night.

The teenager was being held at the Norfolk Detention Center.
