N. RIVER FALLS IN GROUP AA FIELD HOCKEY

Jane Poole's goal four minutes into overtime gave Western Albemarle a 2-1 win over Nansemond River in the Group AA state invitational field hockey tournament championship Saturday at Fauquier High School.

Western Albemarle (10-3-1) tied the game with less than five minutes remaining in the second half. Nansemond River (14-4) had opened the scoring on Melissa Johnson's goal with 13 seconds left before halftime.

Both teams, nicknamed the Warriors, had trouble keeping their footing. A steady rain throughout the game left a muddy area in front of both goals.

Nansemond River's Kari Harrell and Heather Behrends each had the ball in front of the goal late in the game, but couldn't stay on their feet.

``Of course it affected the game, but we all had to play in it,'' Nansemond River coach Bucky Payton said. ``We played well enough to win. We played our hearts out.

``Nansemond River topped Fauquier in one semifinal, 2-1, earlier in the day. Sarah Meinertzhagen scored on an assist from Behrends, and Behrends scored on a pass from Kristi Mizelle.

Western Albemarle beat James Monroe, 2-0, in the other semifinal. by CNB
