N. RIVER RALLIES PAST YORK IN BAY RIVERS FINAL

Nansemond River staged a late fourth-quarter comeback for an overtime 60-55 upset over regular-season champion York in Saturday's Bay River District's girls basketball tournament final at York.

Trailing 29-22 headed into the final period of regulation, the Warriors (20-5) exploded for a 15-12 run to put an end to a lead the Falcons (21-5) had held throughout the game.

Nansemond River pulled within a point with 6:39 left to play in regulation when Demetria Beamon connected on both ends of a one-and-one.

The Warriors, using a 2-1-2 zone defense, shut down the Falcons' inside game for 3:44 while Williams, Amy Patterson and Monica Southall converted York's lapse into a 49-46 Nansemond River lead.

York tied it 50-50 with 1:25 left to play when Heather Tomlison sank a pair of free throws. The Falcons took what proved to be their last lead with 55 seconds to go on a Regina Straight jumper. The Warriors fired back to make it 52-52 with 36 seconds remaining as Southall laid up Jannie Porter's missed shot.

In overtime, Nansemond River worked its post game to perfection as Williams dished off inside to Porter, who had six of her 15 points in the final four minutes, for an 8-3 Warriors run. by CNB
