A 48-year-old man was killed Saturday night when he apparently lost control of the car he was driving and it left the road at high speed and flipped several times.
James Joseph Sutherland of the 600 block of Saddlehorne Drive, who was alone in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The accident occurred about 9p.m. in the 1500 block of Centerville Turnpike.
Police said Sutherland was speeding north on Centerville when he failed to negotiate a turn. The car went off the road, struck a utility pole, crossed back over the road, flipped into a ditch and then flipped again, finally coming to a rest on its side in a cluster of trees.
Police said rainy weather, as well as excessive speed, contributed to the accident.
