INFORMATION OFFICERS WIN STATE RECOGNITION

Three area school systems' public information officials have won statewide recognition for programs and publications.

Diane Knox of Currituck County Public Schools, Kathy M. Newbern of Dare County Schools and Charles White of the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank school system took home seven of 47 Blue Ribbon Awards for Effective Communications.

The awards are given annually by the North Carolina School Public Relations Assocation, which this year held its state conference in Burlington.

Among the awards:

Knox, public information officer for Currituck County, for her 1993-94 annual report and calendar; for promotional items, the Elvis T-shirts given at last year's volunteers banquet; and for promotion project, the PASS It On community tours of schools.

Schools Superintendent William R. Capps, who also was involved in the PASS program, accompanied Knox to the conference.

Newbern, director of school/community relations for Dare County schools, for internal communication, the employee newsletter ``Dare Tidings''; and for general information for a flier on two school ``Information Highway'' sites.

White, director of school-community relations in Elizabeth City-Pasquotank, for internal communication, a monthly employee newspaper called ``stuff. . . ;' and for a community newsletter called ``Parents+Plus.''

White also is serving this year as the state organization's president.

The communication contest annually recognizes outstanding work among North Carolina's public schools' community and public relations officials.

Knox was only one of two school public relations officers in the state to bring home three awards. Her counterpart in Rocky Mount-Nash County was the other. by CNB
