Merry-Go-Round Enterprises Inc., which has been in bankruptcy proceedings for almost two years, said it will close about 375 of its 950 stores and eliminate its Chess King chain. The reduction to 575 stores will begin after Jan. 1. A spokesman declined to say how many jobs would be lost but said it would be commensurate with a company shrinking by about 40 percent. The company did not say which stores will close. Employees are expected to be notified within the next several days. Merry-Go-Round, an apparel company, has three stores in South Hampton Roads.
