FASHION: STYLE FOR HAVING A BALL

DESPITE A cautious year in fashion trends, the look remains sexy when it comes to the holidays. Special-occasion dressing is still an important part of a woman's wardrobe.

``We are selling a lot more full-length evening gowns than we use to,'' said Judy Smith of Sarah Cohen in Virginia Beach. ``Woman are wearing them to the ankle or slightly above.''

But when it comes to an event like the Holly Ball, opulence seems to be the word of the day. The sound of taffeta and sequins that sparkle are common. Sleek, structured and strapless will also have a place amid the host of sexy party dresses seen this year. Satin high-heeled slings and lower-heeled pumps with iridescent shine are dance floor must-haves.

Embellishments and fluffy styling are not as prevalent as in previous years. Many of this season's offerings maintain a cleaner look featuring fabrics in velvet, satin and silk that can readily shift from cocktail to elegant.

But what's the fun of dressing up if you have to dress down? Using special accessories like flowing chiffon scarves and rhinestone jewelry can give your look added glitz.

``I love to show customers where to put elegant pins in unexpected places,'' said Janice Smith of Binn's in Williamsburg. ``Placing a pin on a shoulder, sleeve or the back of an evening suit makes such a unique statement. I even nestle one in the feather trim of a gown.''

Being glamourous in what holiday dressing is all about. So from now until New Years Eve, be dazzling, be daring and have a ball. ILLUSTRATION: HUY NGYEN
