The director of the Division of Marine Fisheries announced Tuesday that the striped bass season in the Albemarle Sound for recreational hook-and-line fishermen will open at 12:01 a.m. next Wednesday, Nov. 22.
Anglers will be allowed to fish only on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday each week until the close of the season, now set for midnight Sunday, Dec. 31.
The director, Bruce L. Freeman, also said hook-and-line anglers will be allowed no more than two striped bass a day, 21 or more inches long.
The Albemarle Sound area includes the sound and all its inland and joint water tributaries except for the Roanoke, Eastmost, Middle and Cashie rivers; Currituck Sound and all its inland water tributaries; and Roanoke and Croatan sounds and their inland and joint water tributaries, north of a line from Roanoke Marshes Point to the north end of Eagle Nest Bay.
Freeman pointed out that it is illegal to sell stripers taken by hook-and-line.
Freeman also announced that the commercial fishing season for striped bass in the ocean off North Carolina will open at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1, and continue until March 31 or when 100,000 pounds of striper have been caught.
Commercial fishermen are limited to fish 28 inches or longer.
Up to 125 a day per crew may be caught on ocean beach seines. Ocean trawlers are not allowed to have more than 100 stripers aboard, regardless of the days at sea. Gill netters can have no more than 25 stripers aboard, regardless of the days at sea.
