The conclusion of the recent election makes it apparent that Gov. George Allen has misjudged the mood and concerns of many of Virginia's voters. He tried to blame even imagined problems on ``tax-and-spend liberals'' who control government.
Many went to the polls to say that we still want those same capable and fair men and women to provide a balance to Governor Allen's conservative, big-business agenda. Many Virginians are moderates who don't want our schools and colleges ruined by cutbacks to provide unwanted tax cuts. Many of us don't want him to sell our environmental-protection regulations to the highest political donor. Many of us expect the lottery money to stay in Richmond to be used for the whole state's educational program.
The General Assembly now has a balanced representation of regional concerns. But Governor Allen is supposed to represent what is best for all Virginians, rich and poor, rural areas and cities, young and old. If he honestly wants change, that would be a good place to start.
