Nansemond-Suffolk Academy softball standout Sarah Putnam accepted a full scholarship Wednesday to play at the University of Maryland.
Putnam, a two-time All-Tidewater pitcher who was 44-6 over the past two years for the Saints, will move to catcher for the Terrapins.
``I've enjoyed pitching, but catching is what I really love to do,'' she said. ``That's where I started off.''
Putnam will join high school All-American pitcher Kelly Shipman, now a freshman, on a Maryland team that went 15-33 in the program's first season a year ago.
Putnam said she chose the Terrapins over North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Putnam batted over .500 and had a .089 ERA last season.
Churchland pitchers Robert Jones and Chris Kelly, a righty-lefty combination, have both signed to receive baseball scholarships from William and Mary.
Jones is a 6-1, 180-pound lefthander who compiled a 0.73 ERA with 98 strikeouts in 54 innings for the Truckers last spring. He also ranks No. 1 academically in the senior class at Churchland.
Kelley is a 6-2, 180-pound righthander who had a 6-0 record and a 1.25 ERA as a junior. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
